MEASURING THE NOISE ATTENUATION OF SHOTBLASTING HELMETS

A proposal has been drafted for a simple test method for measuring the noise attenuation of shotblasting helmetsusing the HATS prescribed by BS EN 271. The results presented in this report showed that testing shotblastinghelmets on this HATS gave attenuation data that was comparable with the data measured on human subjects. Whenused to estimate the overall attenuation provided by helmets in typical shotblasting noise, this data underestimatedoverall attenuation by up to 4 dB. A second proposal has also been drafted in which air supply noise generatedinside blasting helmets is measured using the HATS prescribed by BS EN 271. It is intended to put forward theproposals that noise attenuation and air supply noise are measured using the HATS prescribed by BS EN 271, whenBS EN 271 comes up for revision in 2000.
