A series of listening tests were conducted to validate the subjective performance of a proprietarybinaural room scanning (BRS) measurement and playback system. A panel of trained listenersgave comparative preference ratings for different spectral equalizations applied to a high qualityautomotive audio system. Preferences were measured using two playback methods: 1) playingthe audio system in situ and 2) through a calibrated headphone-based BRS auditory display thatreproduced the binaural room impulse responses of the audio system captured earlier in the car.The tests were repeated in a single channel (mono) and 2-channel (stereo) playback mode. Inboth cases, the in situ and BRS playback methods produced essentially the same results. Inconclusion, the study provides experimental evidence that accurate and reliable perceptualmeasurements of automotive audio system sound quality are possible using a calibrated BRSmeasurement and playback system.
