The new Ray W. Herrick Laboratories Center for High Performance Buildings at PurdueUniversity included floor vibration limits among its design requirements. Complexity wasintroduced by a requirement to accommodate simultaneous experiments and the proximity ofsome building locations to a public road, resulting in the design of several different slab-ongradeconditions. Consequently, portions of the floor are supported on neoprene isolators,portions are on grade but thickened and cut to separate them from the rest of the building slab,and one portion has an independent spread footing. As part of building commissioning, vibrationmeasurements were made on these various slab segments during controlled drive-by passes (onthe road) of a fully loaded dump truck. To act as a useful reference during design of futurebuildings, this paper describes the specifics of the slab conditions and presents the results of thevibration measurements.
