Fracture toughness in a carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite is very importantrnfor damage resistance and tolerance of an aircraft’s primary structures. A conventionalrnapproach to increase mode I fracture toughness is to utilize a soft nanomaterial incorporatedrninto the polymer. Yet, this approach greatly reduces compressive properties of the composite.rnThis paper introduces a hard nanosized toughener engineered for its spatial distribution in arncomposite article, which allows simultaneous improvements of G_(IC) and open-holerncompression (OHC) as well as tensile strength (TS) and short beam strength (SBS), a.k.a.rninterlaminar shear strength (ILSS). A reinforced interphase comprising the hard nanomaterialrnwas responsible for the substantially improved performance envelope.
