NASA’S COMMERCIAL CREW PROGRAM, THE NEXT STEP IN U.S. SPACE TRANSPORTATION

The Commercial Crew Program (CCP) is leadingrnNASA’s efforts to develop the next U.S. capability forrncrew transportation and rescue services to and from thernInternational Space Station (ISS) by the mid-decaderntimeframe. The outcome of this capability is expectedrnto stimulate and expand the U.S. space transportationrnindustry. NASA is relying on its decades of humanrnspace flight experience to certify U.S. crewed vehiclesrnto the ISS and is doing so in a two phase certificationrnapproach. NASA Certification will cover all aspects ofrna crew transportation system, including development,rntest, evaluation, and verification; program managementrnand control; flight readiness certification; launch,rnlanding, recovery, and mission operations; sustainingrnengineering and maintenance/upgrades. To ensurernNASA crew safety, NASA Certification will validaterntechnical and performance requirements, verifyrncompliance with NASA requirements, validate the crewrntransportation system operates in appropriaternenvironments, and quantify residual risks.
