ROYAL CARIBBEAN'S JEWEL of the SEAS IN THE SAFEGUARD TRIALS

This document describes the general specifics of the "Jewel of the Seas" and her itinerary at the time of the trials which were conducted as part of the SAFEGUARD project. It also includes information relating to the preparation of the trial, including the associated logistics and the execution of the trial. The Jewel of the Seas trial represents the largest single assembly trial ever undertaken and monitored at sea. Approximately 2300 passengers were on board the vessel during the sailing. The trial took place on the day after departure from Harwich UK. Given the obligatory nature of the assembly drill all passengers participated in the drill and the vast majority of the passengers agreed to participate in the research element of the drill i.e. the assembly trial. The trial was successfully completed generating a vast amount of data. This including passenger response times, passenger assembly times, passengers' initial locations and final locations at the assembly stations. The data collected will be used to form recommendations to IMO regarding response times on cruise ships as well as a validation data set, validation protocol and acceptance criteria for use with evacuation modelling software.
