Steel industry generates a substantial quantity of the so called Electric Arc Furnace Dust (EAFD) that contains hazardous metals such as Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu or Zn. Therefore, the disposal of this waste has become a serious problem in recent years. In this paper, the reliability of using these wastes as an addition to the cementitious matrixes, in relation to the resulting durability of the mixes, has been studied. Different mixes of mortar containing the same percentage of EADF but different ratio [EAFD/(Cement+EAFD)] have been submitted to compressive strength. These results have been the basis to selected a mix to be tested for a durability program (initial and final setting time, DRX study, total porosity and pore size distribution, determination of the chloride diffusion coefficient and dimensional stability tests), assuming that the lower percentage of [EAFD/(Cement+EAFD)] would lead to an improved product. From the obtained results it has been deduced that, for the conditions used in this research, EAFD can be used as an addition to mortars without an apparent loss in their durability properties.
