For many years, a poor and uncontrolled service life of concrete structures with an increasing spending of resources on repairs, rehabilitation and premature demolition does not only represent technical and economical problems. This is poor utilization of natural resources and hence also a resource and environmental problem. In order to approach this problem, much research work on durability design has been carried out in recent years. However, almost nothing of all that research has been incorporated in current concrete codes so far. Also, much of the problems to the poor performance is related to large variations in construction quality due to variations in concrete production, curing conditions and workmanship. This may negate any potential benefits from improved material specifications and better design. Therefore, it is also important to develop an unproved basis for quality control of concrete construction. In the present paper, current experience with durability design of concrete structures and performance-based quality control of concrete construction is briefly summarized and discussed. The experience has shown that such a quality control may provide an improved basis both for adjustments and corrective measures during concrete construction. At the end of concrete construction, a final documentation of the in situ quality may also be obtained. Such a documentation is very important both for a more complete assessment of expected service life and for the facility management of the structures in question.
