Secondary stickies are formed from dissolved and colloidal substances present in process water stream of pulp and paper mills. When these process stream undergoes a physical and chemical change, the dissolved and colloidal substances (DCS) precipitates or agglomerates forming solid stickies. In this work we attempt to explore possible effect of ozone oxidation on process water containing secondary stickies. The new turbidity difference method is used to measure the effectiveness of the ozone treatment. Model process water containing RFA and lignin compounds was treated with ozone. After treatment we observed color changes and decrease in turbidity. The combination of ozone treatment and polymer flocculation aid results in the reduction of the process water turbidity. Ozone treatment at higher alkaline condition results in decrease of turbidity of the process water.
