The State North Rhine Westfalia (NRW) in Germany aims at stimulating innovations in solar and low-energyarchitecture through the project "50 Solarsiedlungen, NRW" (50 solar housing estates, NRW). The buildingprojects are not only characterised by an innovative energy concept, but also by excellent social, ecologicaland urban parameters. A holistic planning and construction process, in which architects, investors and energyexperts work together, leads to an optimised combination of ecological and economic aspects.In the area of the solar housing estate of Gelsenkirchen 71 buildingshave been constructed in solar low-energy standard (~ 40kWh/m2a).Solar collectors should cover 60 of the required heat for hot waterconsumption and 35 of the electricity demand should be covered byphotovoltaic systems.TüV Rheinland has been commissioned by the government of NorthRhine Westfalia to co-ordinate the evaluation of the project.Recognised institutions are involved in the evaluation of the housingestate such as ECOFYS, Universit?t Essen, IST,IBG and others.The aim of the evaluation is the analysis of the energy performance ofthe area, to check whether the standards have been achieved. In aholistic analysis, not only technological aspects but also the userinteractionwill be studied;
