Malaysia is located close to the equator and hence is subjected to a very harsh, hot and humidrnclimate. One of the features of the equatorial climate is the excessive humidity, coupled withrnheavy rainfall during the afternoons. Due to the increased affluence of the population, airrnconditioning of buildings (both commercial and residential) has become one of the designrnnecessities. This paper reviews the state of residential air-conditioning in the hot, humid climaternof Malaysia. The external walls and many of the balconies are used to house the outdoor unitsrnof the air-conditioning systems. Sometimes this leads to a very messy exterior facade of thernbuildings. It is proposed to create a properly designed enclosure for the out-door units andrnduring such a design exercise, to incorporate clothes drying facilities. This would lead to a muchrnmore aesthetically pleasing and a functional facade.
