The applicaiton of stepwise linear supervised classification and post-classification automatic logic comparison change detection methods to Landsat TM imagery have allowed to monitor and quantify the restoration process o a large open-cast coal mine in NW Spain. Thus, the multitemporal analysis of 1981, 1991 and 1997 Landsat TM images have shown the progress of hte mien exploitation and the advance of the restoration process. A surface of about 1000 Ha has been restored using different vegetation patterns during the considered period of time.
