Wind-sensitive structures, such as tall buildings, can vibrate excessively because of wind loading. The excessive vibration can affect the daily activities and health of the occupants of a building. To reduce the amplitude of vibration, the use of passive energy dissipation devices such as the tuned mass damper (TMD) is popular due to their low maintenance requirement, robustness and dependability. However, often there is no guideline on the cost effectiveness of using TMDs in mitigating the wind-induced vibration. The main objective of this work is to carry out a cost-effectiveness evaluation of TMDs considering different wind-induced serviceability criteria. For the study, structures designed without and with TMDs are considered. The implication of the results for the codified design by considering wind-induced motion is discussed.
