摘要

During 1998-99, the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) sponsored a studyrnto synthesize the current knowledge on source apportionment of particulate matter in Canada, on a regionby-rnregion basis. The CCME wished to know, to the extent possible, what emission sources in each regionrnmake the greatest contribution to PM_(10) and PM_(2.5). This information will be used to support furtherrndiscussions on implementation strategies for achieving new Canada Wide Standards for particulate matter.rnThe study consisted of reviewing published literature on Canadian source apportionment studies, provincialrnair quality reports, literature on recent Canadian particulate monitoring programs and data from EnvironmentrnCanada’s 1995 Criteria Air Contaminant (CAC) Emission Inventory. The study concluded that the sourcernapportionment of particulate matter varies considerably from one region to another which, in turn, meansrnthat implementation strategies will need to vary from one region to another. Recommendations were madernfor further study, to better identify the key sources of particulate matter in Canada. In this paper, wernsummarize the overall findings and recommendations of the study, with emphasis on the western regionsrnof Canada.
