At the end of the year 2003, STNA began to install a mode S radar at Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle airport.This was the first French selective interrogation radar to be integrated into the operational air traffic control system.rnThis major event terminated a long process of design, development, standardisation and validation of mode S technology.rnThis was the start of a practical implementation period of a modern technology with new operational functions that DNArn(Direction de la Navigation Aérienne - Air Navigation Directorate), SCTA (Service du Contr?le du Trafic Aerien -Air TrafficrnControl Service) and STNA (Service Technique de la Navigation Aérienne – Technical Air Navigation Service) included in whatrncould be described as a fourth generation radar strategy, that of the start of the 21st century.rnExactly fifty years have gone by since the first regional control radar was installed at Orly at the end of 1953.rnThis article describes STNA's action plan, and puts this new era into perspective with past strategies.
