The M/T Cheuk Yang of G/T 998.18 loaded 807.482 ton of VCM(Vinyl Chloride Monomer) at Tokuyama in Japan on 25th of April, 1997 and sailed for Kunsan, Korea. On the way to Kunsan she was suddenly altered her course to opposite direction of her original course in the narrow channel between Changjuk-do and Shin-do in front of the island, Chin-do at about 0630 hours on 27th of April, 1997 and coasted down along the east shore line of Changjuk-do and entered into an unthinkable and dangerous narrow channel between the southern end of Chankjuk-do and Kilma-do and capsized at an instant and drifted grounding at last on the western end of the island, Hangan-do on the same date. Due to the sudden capsizing, all of the 10 persons crew of this vessel wer drowned to dealth except the chief engineer who was rescued by a passing sight-seeing boat.
