Accurate roll geometry is essential for achieving good paper machine efficiency and paper quality. Roll roundness and concentricity errors alone are known to result in many costly performance losses on the paper machine including vibrations, decrease in paper quality and non-uniform roll wear. New advances in roll measurement and grinder control technology have been recently introduced that allow more accurate, versatile, faster and reliable roll quality control, and can be easily retrofitted to all types of old and new grinders. This paper discusses the latest developments in roll measurement, documentation and control systems and what benefits they provide for improving paper machine performance as well as reducing overall roll maintenance costs. Modern roll measurement, integrated with complete CNC based grinding control, provide advanced grinding methods such as supergrind and contourgrind, which optimize the grinding process, increase roll cover life and automatically reduce roundness and concentricity errors. These techniques are discussed as well as the results that can be achieved with them. With many proven installations, particularly in Scandinavia, it has now been demonstrated that these new roll measurement and grinding control techniques provide a new, affordable means of increasing paper machine, coater and finishing equipment performance.
