Nickel-carbon (Ni-C) film was investigated for use as anode in polymer exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) as well as other low-temperature acidic fuel cells. The Ni-C film which was synthesized using DC magnetron sputter deposition comprised about 50 at.% nickel. The film was polarized potentiostatically in 1.5 M H_2SO_4 at 70 ℃. The film demonstrated passivity against corrosion in hot sulphuric acid solution and electrocatalytic activity towards the anodic and cathodic hydrogen reactions, even after being polarized at high potential.
