Engineered Barrier System for a Deep Geologic Repository in Canada

The Canadian concept for a deep geologic repository for used nuclear fuel waste comprises a system of multiplernbarriers which include, as engineered barriers, the waste form, container, and repository sealing systems and, as a naturalrnbarrier, the geosphere. One concept entails encapsulating bundles of used fuel in durable containers and sealing therncontainers in a repository located at a depth of between 500 to 1000 m in the stable plutonic rock of the Canadian Shield.rnOntario Power Generation has updated the conceptual designs for a deep geologic repository prepared by Atomic Energy ofrnCanada Limited. Key improvements to the engineered barrier system include a larger 324-bundle used fuel containerrncomprising a copper corrosion-barrier outer vessel and a steel load-bearing inner vessel and the incorporation of highlyrncompacted 100% bentonite clay buffer as a sealing material immediately around the container.
