Preparation, Characterization and Application of a Novel Flocculants Prepared by Mulberry Branch

A polymeric flocculant was synthesized by etherification reaction of mulberry branch with organic amine compounds. The optimal conditions of preparation of the flocculant were determined. The prepared flocculant was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and electrophoresis. The prepared flocculant was used to treat catering wastewater, papermaking wastewater and contaminated river water. The results show that the optimal condition of the preparation of the flocculant are as follows: waste mulberry branch are comminuted into powder of 60 meshes, the optimal etherification agent is hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), NaOH concentration is 8%, concentration of initiator Fe2+/H2O2 is 14mmol/L, the mass ratio of mulberry branch to CTAB is 1:1, reaction temperature is 90℃ by heating with water-bath, reaction time is 3h. IR spectra indicate that etherification reaction occurs between cellulose and CTAB. Thermo-gravimetric analysis suggests that the prepared flocculant has excellent thermal stability at temperature of 30-205℃. The isoelectric point of the flocculant is 8.4. Prepared flocculant has great flocculation efficiency for catering wastewater with high turbidity and concentration, papermaking wastewater and contaminated river water. The removal rates of turbidity of three types of wastewater are 72.9%, 81.3% and 94.6%, respectively. The removal rates of COD are 45.9%, 47.4% and 65.3%, respectively. This suggests that the prepared flocculant can be used as a potentially efficient flocculant to treat wastewater.
