Combined with an in-situ observation, acoustic emission (AE) measurement was proposed to study the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) evolution in a 13Cr martensitic stainless steel (MSS) with different heat treatments. The crack was primarily initiated from the mouth of a corrosion pit, and propagated along the prior austenite grain boundaries. The times to the first AE detection and crack initiation were found to be reduced as the density of Cr-rich carbides increased. AE response to the unit crack length increased with the increasing Vickers hardness. Moreover, the source mechanism for AE signals was discussed with in-situ observational damages.
