Building Tomorrow within the Infrastructure of Yesterday: Geotechnical Solutions in Limited Access Conditions

A variety of foundation and retention systems have been developed to solve the ever evolving demands of the construction industry. The remodeling and expansion of existing structures often leads to the use of innovative foundation and retention systems, allowing access to difficult locations while maintaining the integrity and operation of the existing structures.rnThe challenge is finding the right geotechnical solutions for the project. This paper will demonstrate how the All Star Cafe renovation and expansion at Mystic Lake Casino in Prior Lake, Minnesota required the use of a variety of specialized foundation and retention systems in conjunction to meet the site improvement and expansion needs of the owner while maintaining 24/7 operations. A combination of micro-piles, soil nails, shotcrete, and conventional underpinning were installed within the heart of the Mystic Lake Casino complex. The site provided limited access for equipment and required that operations at the facility be uninterrupted during the construction process.
