In an atmosphere of CO_2 dolomite decomposes in two endothermic stages. The first is to break down the dolomite to CaCO_3 and MgO with evolution of CO_2. The second stage is the dissociation of the CaCO_3 into CaO and CO_2. Various samples of dolomite were studied using TG in atmosphere of CO_2 and N_2. As the pressure of CO_2 is reduced, there is a tendency for the dissociation temperature of the CaCO_3 to be lowered, but the initial decomposition is not so adversely effected. The present study notes the temperature ranges of the two stages for the various amples, their chemical reactivity, X-ray diffraction data and product surface areas.
