New software, known as "Highway TA," has been developed by Seiko Instruments for analyzing certain samples by DSC and TGA at very fast heating rates (e.g., 100 deg C/min) and then mathematically extrapolating the results to "normal" heating rates (e.g., 10 or 20 deg C/min). The approach that is taken is to use peak separation and the Arrhenius activation energy to establish time-temperature conversion of the DSC or TGA results. With this software, samples can be analyzed at very fast heating rates, and using the link between temperature and time, the results can be successfully and accurately extrapolated to slower rates. The approach taken with the "Highway" software will be described, and examples will be presented on the applications to the QC or QA fields, where repetitive samples are analyzed and where significant and substantial analysis time savings are desired.
