Case Scenario Investigation of Beach Nourishment in Eresos Beach, Lesvos, Greece

In this study, the nourishment needs of an eroding island beach (Eresos,rnLesvos) are assessed through the collection/analysis of beachrnmorphological, sedimentary and wind time-series (2009-2011) andrnwave hindcasting. 8 different beach nourishment scenarios have beenrninvestigated, in terms of scheme cost and life span. The results showedrnthat the most cost-effective scheme involves beach nourishment withrncoarse-sized material sediment (median grain size of 2 mm), which isrnslightly coarser than the resident beach sediment. Finally, the earlyrnevolution of the beach profiles following nourishment has been studiedrnthrough 1-D morphodynamic modeling under the present sea level andrnwave conditions and under increased sea levels.
