Hydraulic experiments and field data show that the destruction ofrncoastal levees and revetments are mainly caused by the suction of waterrnwhich returning waves move over the area. Repeated wave attacksrnreduce the front sand beach, decreasing shear resistance at thernfoundation; however, shear force produced by return flow increases. Asrna result, a lot of sand is sucked out from the foundation, leading to arnlevee break.rnIn this paper, new formulas to clarify whether or not a coastal structurernwill break due to suction are obtained from hydraulic experiments.rnFurthermore, the effect of suction protection by the use of stones for thernlevee body is also confirmed using a hydraulic experiment.
