The Wind-Challenger Project aims to design a sailing cargo shiprnassisted by advanced marine weather forecasts and weatherrnrouting. This paper illustrates the components of the integratedrnweather routing system under development. Atmosphericrnreanalysis products are used to determine the statistical meansrnand variations of the wind fields. Height correction of windrnspeeds at 60 m is applied using realistic roughness schemes andrncharacteristics. The marine gust factor is calculated fromrnobservations. Preliminary results of the ship navigation systemrnunder development optimize fuel usage, suggesting that thernsailing cargo ship is feasible.
