Radiological Countermeasures: Candidates for Inclusion in a State Strategic Stockpile

The New Jersey Center for Public Health Preparedness at UMDNJ has developed a select list of radiological countermeasures for potential inclusion within the NJ State Strategic Stockpile, for response to a radiological incident. The Pharmaceuticals are displayed in a series of informational tables, arranged by Brand Name, Class, Cost, Function, Availability, Contraindications, FDA status, Prescription Status, Urgency of Administration, Route of Administration, Dose Strength, Shelf Life & Storage, Radioisotope, the Exposure Pathway of the Radiological Agent and the Health Risks of the Radiological Agent. The tables are accompanied by a reference list, allowing the user to search for a radiological countermeasure either by the pharmaceutical name or by the radionuclide. This paper discusses the basis for recommending these items for protection from the deleterious effects of ionizing radiation by: (1) preventing or reducing exposure, (2) removing or blocking radioactive materials from the body, and (3) reducing radiosensitivity.
