A numerical model is developed for the simulation of a loading test on layered rockrnby a 2D-discrete element code. Experiments on slate rock have shown that when thernlayering has an inclination angle equal to the friction angle, fractures develop both inrnlayer direction and other directions. In the simulations, this configuration is studied.rnDeformation behaviour, peak strength and fracture pattern are discussed withrnexperimental data in mind. Also the influence of natural variability of parameters,rni.e. spatial variability and the degree of strength anisotropy is examined. Thernsimulations establish the interdependence of the different modelling parameters andrndetermine the governing failure mechanism for this loading configuration.
