Stiffened plating is one of the most fundameutal structures in shiprnarid offshore structures as well as in mariy other civil engineeringrnstructures. In this sense; it is very importaut to assess the strengthrnof stiffened plating; arid one of the most important strength is againstrnbuckling/plastic collapse. To iuvestigate into such collapsernbeha>iour and strength, pleutty of research works hawz been performedrnup to uow both experimeutally and theoretically. In theoreticalrnanalysis; stiffeners are modelled in two ways7 which arernby plates arid by beam-columns. It has not been clear when stiffenersrncan be modelled by beam-column and when it should bernmodelled by plate. In the present paper; this problem was discussedrnori the basis of the analytical and numerical calculations.rnAt the beginning, local buckling strength of a stiffened plate wasrnboth analytically arid numerically calculated with beam-columnrnmodelling. After confirming that analytical and uumerical resultsrnshowed good correlations; au application limit of beam-columnrnmodelling was discussed by comparing the results of analyses byrnbeam-column modelling arid shell mode&q+ Then the differencernin collapse behaviour was discussed when stiffeners were modelledrnby beam-column and plate respectively. Also for the analysis ofrnultimate strength, an applicability of the beam-column modellingrnwas discussed.
