External lighting designs, modifications and applications for use during NVG operatiosn have trailed those applied to NVG-compatible cockpit lighting systems. This is due to several reasons: limited experience among many commands, the lack ofestablished valid requirements, a view that acquiring both cockpit and external suites would be much too costly, and the lack of an organized and coordinated review of alternatives and solutions being drafted and disseminated. Additionally, the widespread distribution of image intensification devices (e.g., NVGs) throughout the world has confused the concept of what defines "covert" lighting. The purpose of this paper is to provide information concerning external lighting from the viewpoint of the user that will allow more educated decisions when considering various design alternatives. System design and testing recommendations are added for completeness.
