This paper concerns the effect of dissimilar rates of wear and damage of rails in thernvicinity of a rail junction where two different subway rails are welded together.rnSuch strong wear dissimilarities may introduce instability of the moving carriagernand customer comfort will be considerably reduced. As the wheels impact on therngeometrically imperfect joint impact forces develop which force the carriage(s) tornalter wheel-rail contact which in turn will lead to changing normal and shear forces.rnAs expected, sudden impact induces a strong increase of vertical head wear of thernopposite rail. Results of various simplified impact models confirm the in-siturnmeasurements.
