SIG/HCI AND ACM/SIGIR-INTELLIGENT AND KNOWLEDGE-BASED INTERFACES FOR INFORMATION RETRIEVAL

As information systems become more complex, as information retrieval increasingly penetrates into everyday life, as we learn more about the nature and goals of information retrieval, so does it become increasingly clear that information retrieval systems must be designed for use by those who require information, the so-called end users. For a variety of reasons, it has been suggested that at least the point of contact between the end user and the rest of the information retrieval system, the interface, must be intelligent, or knowledge-based. There has been significant research in intelligent interfaces, both within information retrieval, and in other fields. In this session, active investigators in these areas discuss the reasons why they believe an intelligent or knowledge-based interface is necessary for information retrieval systems, present their views on what constitutes intelligence (or the required knowledge) in such interfaces, and present descriptions of interfaces which respond to these issues. Each of the speakers brings a different perspective to the panel topic; the result should be an informative and lively debate on what can, and should be done in the design of intelligent interfaces for information retrieval. There will be substantial opportunity for audience participation.
