A grating-coupled surface-emitting semiconductor laser consists of an in-plane laser with an integrated waveguide grating-coupler. The grating-coupler couples the light from the laser out of the waveguide and simultaneously shapes the emitted beam. Such integrated light emitters do not require any external micro-optics. Here, we report on the progress towards fully integrated grating-coupled surface-emitters. Three topics will be addressed: high efficiency outcouplers, broad-area laser geometries and diffractive beam-forming outcouplers.
