Energy Codes provide a baseline for energy efficiency in construction. They are frequently used for comparison purposes when designers wish to express the degree of energy efficiency in their design. ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1 is cited in the 1992 U. S. National Energy Policy Act as the baseline for State Commercial Energy Codes. This paper summarizes the draft update to the building envelope requirements including the consideration of daylighting, U-factor, solar heat gain coefficient, visible light transmittance, overhangs, thermal mass, insulation location, roof reflectance and other factors in setting the criteria for the prescriptive and tradeoff compliance options for opaque components and fenestration (including windows, doors, and skylights).
