One of the nine instruments on-board the polar-orbitingrnenvironmental satellite ENVISAT is the Global OzonernMonitoring by Occultation of Stars (GOMOS)rninstrument. This paper presents validation results ofrnGOMOS ozone profiles (v6.0a) from comparisons tornmicrowave radiometer, balloon ozonesonde and lidarrnmeasurements worldwide. Thirty-one instruments/rnlaunch-sites at twenty-five stations ranging from thernArctic to the Antarctic joined in this activity. Wernidentified 3,713 useful collocated observations that werernperformed within an 800-km radius and a maximum 20-rnhours time difference of a satellite observation, for thernperiod June 2002 and March 2003. These collocatedrnprofiles were compared and the results were analyzedrnfor possible dependencies on several geophysical (e.g.,rnlatitude) and GOMOS observational (e.g., starrncharacteristics) parameters. In a dark atmospheric limbrnthe GOMOS data agree very well with the correlativerndata and between 20- to 61-km altitude their differencesrnonly show a small (2.5%) insignificant negative biasrnwith a standard deviation of about 14%. This conclusionrnis demonstrated to be independent of the starrntemperature and magnitude, and the latitudinal region ofrnthe GOMOS observation.
