SEVERE RADIO FREQUENCY INTERFERENCE IN ALOS PALSAR IMAGES

This paper describes severe, broadband, radio frequencyrninterference from L-band ALOS PALSAR images acquiredrnnear Barrow, Alaska, that is shown to be the resultrnof a military over-the-horizon radar system. We introducernthe specifics of the interfering signal and showrnthat the standard level 1.1 processing procedure is insufficientrnto remove its influence. A new approach for filteringrnthis interferences is presented and its performance isrnanalysed by a cross comparison with reference methods.rnThe capabilities of the new correction method are emphasisedrnby presenting several before-and-after Pauli RGBrnimages and clustering results to clearly show the interferencernproblem and the subsequent filtering improvement.
