A treatment train consisting of oznation, direct filtration, and biological filtration through granular activated carbon (GACO media was evaluated. Use of pre-ozone in direct filtration improved THM precursor removal as compared to use of prechlorination and direct filtration. A biologically active GAC filter removed an additional fraction of precursor materials, further lowiering the THM concentrations that would form in water distribution systems receiving the treated water with a free chlorine residual. Another benefit of biological filtration was the reduction in the conentration of assimilable organic carbon.
