China is the largest coal-producer and consumer in the world. However, during a long time, the underground coal fire has been a threat to the safety of coal production, even to the society. How to make full use of thermal infrared remote sensing to position the coal fire areas and burning center rapidly and accurately has attracted attention from many researchers and institutions. Traditional method for monitoring the underground coal fires mainly use the DN value of thermal infrared image, and only do some qualitative researches, not related with the research and application land surface temperature (LST). In this paper, based on Landsat5 TM data, the preliminary analysis of the application of the Weng retrieving method on Wuda mining area in Inner Mongolia autonomous region, has been presented. The results show that the retrieval results of Weng method in line with the spatial distribution of temperature of underground coal fire areas, which can be seen the high-temperature anomaly regions were obviously. The Weng method has certain applicability on obtaining the LST of underground coal fire areas.
