Using the equations of elasticity, the von Mises stress concept and its associated flow rule, a consistent and comprehensive set of equations for determining an equivalent uniaxial stress-strain state from a proportional biaxial stress-strain state are presented. Many authors have used 'von Mises equivalent' stress/strain relationships over the years to interpret their data, but the derivation, presentation, and limitations of the standard forms of these equations are usually incomplete. This paper attempts to codify the use of the equations for the reduction of common biaxial (axial-torsion) experimental data. Several biaxial data sets are analyzed from the literature through the equivalent stress-strain curve and the equivalent strain versus life relationship.
