Modelling of Interior Column Loads Transmission through Flat-Plate Floors

The theoretical models available in the 1995 ACI code and Canadian design standards CSA A23.3-94 are generally used to calculate the effective strength of a high performance concrete interior column with an intervening normal strength concrete slab. These models are based on the laboratory tests with no load on the slab. As a result the design provisions given in the code may over- or underestimate the column strength because they do not properly model the confinement conditions of the column-slab joint. This study is focused on the analysis of experimental results with the application of ultimate loading events on the slab and service on the column. The test results explain that the intensity of slab load, the joint aspect ratio, the rate of slab reinforcement, and the surrounding slab confinement affect the strength of an interior column-slab joint. Based on these parameters a new design relationship modifying the provisions in the above codes with properly model for confinement conditions is proposed and developed.
