Nickel sulphamate solution is one of the electrolytes used in the nickel electroless and electroplating industries. A laboratory leaching process, which dissolves nickel matte originally from PT INCO containing more than 76percent nickel with a mixture of ammonia-ammonium nitrate, has been investigated for the possible production of nickel sulphamate salt. The leaching of nickel matte was studied under various experimental conditions at atmospheric pressure. The effects of pH, composition of the leach solution and particle size were observed. The rate of nickel dissolution was influenced by the ammonium nitrate concentration at a solution pH higher than 8.0. The leaching process is characterized by no indication of gas formation and the similarity of the mineralogical composition of the matte and the leach residues.
