A review of the hydrometallurgical recovery of cobalt from sulfide ores

Today there are no primary cobalt mines in the world and thus cobalt is usually recovered as a byproduct of copper and/or nickel extraction. Therefore, cobalt production is strongly related to copper and nickel production. In contrast to copper and nickel, which are usually produced by pyrometallurgical techniques, most of the world's cobalt is produced by hydrometallurgical processes.
