A significant barrier to the widespread adoption of aluminum intensive vehicles is the higher price of aluminum automobile bodies compared with steel bodies.However,the cost difference between equivalent steel and aluminum bodies decreases as the potential weight savings of over 50 percent with aluminum is realized.On the other hand,because aluminum scrap is more valuable with aluminum is realized.On the other hand,because aluminum scrap is more valuable than steel scrap,the high scrap rates associated with stamping operations tends to increase the cost difference.Considering the total system,the cost difference can be reduced by capturing the full value of the aluminum stamping scrap though closed-loop recycling.
