Ultra-high density optical fiber cable with 'Spider Web Ribbon'

In order to construct optical fiber networks economically and efficiently, we have successfully developed new ultra-high density optical fiber cables which are applied for underground and aerial networks. These cables contain newly developed optical fiber ribbon which is called "Spider Web Ribbon". By optimizing several structural parameters, we have achieved the highest level in the world of the fiber packaging density of the newly developed cables. Compared with the conventional slotted core cable, the new cable dimension was able to be reduced by 29% in diameter and 52% in weight. Decreasing cable diameter and weight will make it possible to use existing facility such as underground dusts or telephone poles and will reduce cable cost as well as installation cost. In this paper, we will describe the design concept of new cable and new fiber ribbon, and performance of trial cable.
