Hydroxyapatite (HA) coated Ti implants, which combine the superior mechanical properties of Ti with the excellent biocompatibility and bioactivity of HA, are important for orthopaedic and dental clincial applications. Coating HA on Ti implants using ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) technique has been investigated as a means for improving the mechanical properties of the ceramic/metal interface. This work aims to examine the ceramic/metal interface in order to provide atomic details of the interface and to understand the origin of enhanced bonding strength.
