摘要

Sustainable design practices and the related efforts to quantify, rate and require them have created a transformation of mechanical noise control, isolation and room acoustics in buildings. First, the demands for “green” products, sustainable approaches and energy efficient systems have led to major changes in building design. These changes include HVAC system design practices, new methods and materials for constructing walls, floors and roofs, and new products for surface treatments and suspended ceilings. Secondly, the recognition of the importance of acoustics for indoor environmental quality in the sustainable design community (such as USGBC-LEED or CHPS) and other efforts such as the classroom acoustics standard has led to a revolution in the specification of acoustics in building codes, regulations, design guides, and standards. Some high profile examples include the International Green Construction Code, International Building Code, ASHRAE 189.1, ANSI S12.60-2010, FGI Guidelines for Healthcare Facilities, and ADA rulemaking on classroom acoustics. To my knowledge, in the United States this is the first time there has been such an extensive effort to change the way we construct buildings or to ensure attention to acoustics outside OSHA and occupational noise.
