Development of floors in wood-frame construction to improve the floor impact sound insulation

Among the objections and the troubles of houses in Japan, the sound insulation performance isone of the most serious issues, especially floor impact sound. The floor impact sound insulationperformance of the wooden construction is low in comparison with the concrete construction.For the wooden construction, the ways to increase mass and rigidity of floor and isolation ofceiling from floor joists are known to improve the floor impact sound insulation performance. Toconfirm those solutions and developing new floor structure, several floors with wood-frameconstruction were examined in the laboratory. The parameters of examinations were floorspecifications; floor coverings, ceilings and so on. The impact sources used for the experimentwere a tapping machine (in ISO 140-6 1 and JIS A 1418-1 2 etc.) for measurement of the lightweightfloor impact sound, and a car-tire source (in JIS A 1418-2 3) and a rubber ball source (inISO 140-11 4 and JIS A 1418-2) for measurement of the heavy-weight floor impact sound.Especially, effectiveness of the floating floors (dry double floors) and ceiling damping were investigated. Moreover, the relationship between the car-tire source and the rubber ball source ispresented to discuss the difference of value for evaluation of the performance.
