In applications designed to reproduce sonic booms, it is of utmost importance to use loudspeakers with excellent short impulse and low frequency responses. Using new and patented technology incorporating inverse filtering and non-linearization, a loudspeaker with a 12” bass element has been designed and produced which has an impulse response twice as fast as a 2” classical design. A loudspeaker with a 15” element has been produced with a low level of about 16 Hz, and the technology promises to make possible responses at or below 1 Hz, thus making these loudspeakers a realistic option for the accurate measurement of sonic boom phenomenon. The new design utilizes a constant group delay, so that the transient response remains extremely fast and the waveform is kept intact. The innovative approach eliminates many of the nonlinearities limiting classical loudspeaker design and sound reproduction, especially in the area of low frequency response. The paper presents results from both 12” and 15” loudspeaker designs.
