The incoherent sound field obtained by scanning measurement cannot be used directly fornearfield acoustical holography to reconstruct the sound field. And therefore, theincoherent sound field has to be decomposed into fully coherent partial fields. In the existedpartial field decomposition methods, the pressure is often used as reference. In this paper, the pressure gradient is alternatively used as the reference. Since the pressure gradientdecays faster than the pressure, the interaction between pressure gradients of incoherentsources is weaker than that between pressures, which improves the effect of the partial fielddecomposition. A numerical simulation and an experiment are investigated to test thefeasibility of the method, and the results demonstrate that the partial field decompositionmethod using pressure gradient references is robust and the decomposed results are betterthan those using pressure references.
